Invitation to attend ICIAM 2007
It is a great pleasure to invite all interested persons to attend the 6th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, ICIAM 2007, to be held in Zurich, Switzerland during 16-20 July. We welcome not only colleagues in the field from academia but also those persons, especially from industry and the sciences, who make applications of mathematics in their work. We wish also to extend this welcome to those who enjoy having contact with mathematicians as well as to those who are generally interested in finding out what is currently happening in this exciting field.
Our ambitious goal is to create the most important worldwide conference in the field of Industrial and Applied Mathematics since the last congress, ICIAM 2003, held in Sydney. The conference aims to cover the developments in research in applied mathematics, the industrial applications of mathematics, and last but not least the interaction of mathematics with industry and the sciences.
The congress is held under the auspices of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, ICIAM, an international body consisting of approximately 25 professional applied mathematical societies and mathematical societies with a strong membership of applied mathematicians. Previous meetings have been held in Paris 1987, Washington 1991, Hamburg 1995, Edinburgh 1999, Sydney 2003.
ICIAM 2007 is hosted by the Swiss Mathematical Society, SMG, and by the community of Swiss mathematicians.
The program of ICIAM 2007 features:
- invited lectures
- minisymposia
- contributed talks
- posters
- ICIAM and non-ICIAM prizes
- industry days
- special lectures
There will be 27 invited speakers selected by the Scientific Program Committee. The papers by the invited speakers will be published by the EMS-ph, the publishing house of the European Mathematical Society, EMS. We aim for a scientific program with more than 400 minisymposia and sessions of contributed talks. We expect more than 2000 participants and we hope that half of the participants will contribute presentations.
At ICIAM 2003 the new feature of embedded meetings was introduced. We are happy to announce that 4 embedded meetings will make the overall program of ICIAM 2007 Congress even richer. Of these 4 embedded meetings the annual meeting of GAMM, Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, is by far the biggest. It will demonstrate the importance of the cooperation between mathematics and mechanics.
There will be an exhibition where publishers, software developers and hardware vendors will display their products. Other organizations will feature their services.
The organizing committee is making a large effort to keep the costs for delegates attending the Congress low. We have already reserved economical accommodation. Together with the International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and its member societies we shall try to be able to support as many delegates as possible from financially weaker countries. This applies especially to young researchers.
At this point we like to thank our sponsors.
The
goal of ICIAM 2007 is not only to host a conference with interesting
lectures and posters on the newest results and applications in
industry. It is equally important to create a pleasant environment in
which one can and discuss science and professional life with the other
delegates, make new friends as well as renewing old acquaintances. The
Congress will take place in the downtown campuses of the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, and the University of Zurich. The beautiful
old city is just a few minutes away as are the river Limmat and the lake.
Excellent restaurants are plentiful, and do not forget your swimsuit
as it is pleasant to swim in the lake and the river in July.
Thanks to the geographical size of Switzerland and its excellent
transportation services a short train ride can take you on a day
trip to see a glacier or the world famous Interlaken. If you spend a day
more you can see the Matterhorn or the largest glacier of Europe from the Jungfraujoch, for example.
You may also wish to combine your participation at ICIAM with one of the many satellite conferences.
On behalf of the mathematical community in Switzerland and the Swiss Mathematical Society we welcome you and your accompanying persons to our Congress. We promise you an excellent Congress and a unforgettable stay in Switzerland.
